Alright y’all, real talk. I’m not really a fan of Valentine’s Day for two reasons:
1. I don’t like surprises.
2. I’m not big on unrealistic expectations.
It seems that this ‘holiday’ gets more and more focused on those two things every year. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy spoiling my love with a gift that I have spent time researching and selecting especially for him -I mean, I’m not a complete stick in the mud- but he and I are fairly simple people when it comes to gift-giving and receiving. But if you and you lover are the type to get gussied up and go out on the town, we’ve got the perfect lineup of Valentine’s Day-centric events for you. Heck, even if you vehemently oppose V Day… We’ve got something for that attitude, too.
For the Lover’s and Puppy Lover’s out there, here is a full-out plan for your entire Valentine’s Day. We’ve got you covered.
Ladies, peruse the Style & Fashion tab of our good friend Aquila’s blog ‘Haute in Texas’ for ideas for a date night look that will be sure to knock your lover’s socks off. Once you’ve chosen your outfit, get in touch with the team over at Blush Hair and Makeup to complete your look. You’ve got to get your appointment set sooner rather than later, though, because slots are booking fast. Fellas, get over to the Gunter’s underground barber shop for a legit straight shave from owner Lee. Get yourselves looking fresh and step out for some quality time.
Grab a bite at the Pearl Farmer’s Market and then head on over to Stay Golden Social House for their Puppy Love Doggy Date event, featuring the teams from PAWsitively Sweet Bakery and the SA Urban Pet Market. Specialty doggy treats for pups with parents, and an adoption station for those looking to take a new canine Valentine home. There’s plenty of outdoor seating and if the weather keeps up like it has been, it’ll be an amazing option cocktail and puppy aficionados alike.
Tre Trattoria is offering a Sweetheart Lunch 3-course menu for $20. You read that right: share a lovely lover’s lunch on the patio at an amazing price point… Entice your sitter with a few extra bucks during the afternoon so that you can celebrate with your love with the team at Tre.
If you’re into leisurely dinners over a bottle of wine, look no further than Citrus at the Valencia (both the restaurant and hotel were awarded AAA Diamond ratings last week) or Tre Trattoria in Alamo Heights. Citrus will be offering a 6 course tasting menu featuring dishes like crispy sweetbreads with flavors of parsnip, pear, apples and dates and pastry chef Andrea Morgan’s Valhrona chocolate tart with peanut butter mousse, vanilla bean crème fraiche, and peanut “nougat”.

Tre Trattoria will be serving a 5-course Valentine’s Day menu for $70 per person, and guests will have the option to request wine pairings with each course for an additional fee. Call ahead and request one of their cozy booths for a romantic Tuscan-inspired meal.
Attic Rep will also be offering some love inducing food and fun at The Roosevelt Library, which happens to be incredibly romantic on its own. Tonight, however, they’re upping the ante by hosting an AtticRep-styled Valentine’s Day celebration that’s sure to be unforgettable. For $150 enjoy cocktails, dancing, delicious food by Timthegirl, and “romantic surprises around every corner.” For more information and tickets visit their Facebook page HERE
If you’re only stepping out for dessert, consider a moonlight stroll down to The Esquire Tavern for a housemade red velvet cupcake and expertly paired craft cocktail. Chef Brooke Smith is a comfort-food-loving gal, so I’m dying to get my hands on what’s sure to be a decadent, heart-shaped handful of cakey goodness. And talk about atmosphere! Low lights, tabletop lanterns and soft light coming in off the river through a huge bank of windows makes this place uber-romantical.

And if you’re just looking for somewhere cozy to reconnect with your partner, check out The Last Word’s Valentine’s Day special. For every reservation made via OpenTable.com, the staff at TLW will ensure the reserved table is set with a single rose, and if the reservation-maker requests a bottle of bubbly from TLW’s list, the staff will make sure it’s all set when you arrive.
VALENTINE’S DAY, SCHMALENTINE’S DAY
For those of you who are of the frame of mind that Valentine’s Day is a silly idea, stop by The Brooklynite for their second annual Anti-Valentine’s Day event. $8 Whiskey Kisses cocktails and 90s/R&B and slow jams by DJ Steven Lee Moya. I’m a sucker for rye whiskey, BK’s house made barrel-aged bitters, and grapefruit on their own; put them together and tell me I only have to throw $8 down, and that may be enough for me to get out of the house on Valentine’s Day.

If you are all about the anti-Valentine’s Day kinda life, check out our friends at Amaya’s Tacos and Bakery. An Eastside favorite will be showcasing guest chefs and a 6-course dinner for $70 including wine pairings. For more information check out their Facebook event HERE.
